Captain Kirk on the Church

Posted on May 21, 2007July 8, 2025

In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country Captain James T. Kirk stands trial before the Klingons for his ships unprovoked attack on the Klingons and subsequent boarding of their ship and murder of the High Chancellor. While Kirk denies any involvement (it is all a set-up to sabotage peace talks) he is convicted because as Captain he is responsible for the actions of his crew (regardless of his knowledge thereof).

My apologies to those uninitiated into the Star Trek universe, but that scene came to mind the other day in a discussion about church planting and the nature of the church. Church planters are often viewed as the captain of a ship – the entire responsibility rests on them. Of course a ship’s crew has their jobs that actually keep the thing moving, but there still is a captain on whom the responsibility rests. Whether the ship sinks or floats is on the captain. Even if the whole crew mutinies, it is still the captain’s fault.

Even in the Emerging Church/Missional mindset I still see that attitude applied to church planting. Granted that may be because most emerging/missional church plants are really just seeker churches that want to be trendy and actually talk about “the poor” every once in awhile. But its still the issue. The wellbeing of the church rests on the pastor and the success (read high numbers of people and money) of the church is something the pastor must singlehandedly accomplish. (of course this is sooo not an issue in our church plant).

Anyway, I personally think that whole concept is stupid. (how’s that for a thoughtful perspective)

If we are the body as the church, a community that has come together for a common purpose it seems kinda messed up for the “captain” to take all the glory or all the blame. I know I’m “low church” and so am not a fan of hierarchy. I don’t buy the whole pastor as spiritual head that must be submitted to thing. We talk often at church of it being a road trip that we are all taking together, but it still seems like the captain/crew mentality is the dominant paradigm. Not that I promote anarchy or some spiffy organic arcadian model (read- where nothing ever happens because we are all waiting for it to happen organically). I’m just hoping to find a balance somehow. Maybe its just me or perhaps there might be a whole lot more re-imagining of church needed before perceptions change.

Randomness

Posted on May 18, 2007July 8, 2025

Too crazy at the moment to actually think… so I’m resorting to random blog stuff –

First the meme from Mike. Here’s how it works –

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open it to page 161.
3. Find the fifth full sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence along with these instructions.
5. Don’t search around and look for the coolest book you can find. Do what’s actually next to you.

My answer after realizing that the first 6 books I grabbed either didn’t have 161 pages or didn’t have 5 sentences on page 161. This is from the third book down my to read stack –

Even in these biblical accounts, which were obviously written to demean and debase her actions, the description revealed that she took part in the sexual customs of her own free will and that she viewed them not as an obligatory or compulsory duty but as pleasant occasion, rather like festive parties.

Hmm. Interesting. Thats from a discussion of Hosea and Gomer from When God was a Woman by Merlin Stone.

Then I found this from Brother Maynard

Which Star Wars character am I?

You scored as Leia Organa. A princess who uses her political powers to help the rebel alliance. You are calm and cool no matter the situation and always willing to fight for your beliefs. Now if only you could get those cinnamon buns off your head.

Leia Organa
88%
Yoda
75%
Obi-Wan Kenobi
63%
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader
63%
Luke Skywalker
56%
Darth Maul
50%
Padme Amidala
50%
Palpatine
50%
Boba Fett
25%
Han Solo
19%

Which Star Wars character would you be? (pics)
created with QuizFarm.

Fitting I think. (but of course Mara Jade wasn’t on this list…)

And on the topic of Princess Leia – let me introduce you to the Miss Entertainment Pagaent In their words – This “is the beauty pageant for the twenty-first century. No more sleazy judges. No more crusty old men serenading the winner. No more Donald Trump. Only you can crown Miss Entertainment!

In our pageant’s first round, you will vote for the hottest woman in the worlds of television, movies, video games, and comics. In our second and final round, you’ll choose Miss Entertainment from amongst the four category winners from round one. Round one is underway and twenty lovely contestants are vying for your vote.”

But how do I choose between Princess Leia and Eowyn???? At ant rate the promo videos for each contestant were fun to watch…

Enjoy the random fun.

Pop Culture Interlude 2

Posted on May 16, 2007July 8, 2025

Resisting the temptation to dig into the spoilers for next week’s finale, I settled for LOST fan commentary. I came across this in discussion on how all the characters have “daddy-issues”. I so knew there was a deeper reason as to why I watch LOST 🙂 –

Fan commentary –
But back to Daddy-bashing, and to build upon what the producers said: When I consider the father themes of Lost, I find myself linking to Postmodern writer Donald Barthelme, whose ”flash fiction” short stories ”The Balloon” and ”The Game” (about two guys trapped in a hatch) have some intriguing Lost resonances and whose essay ”Not-Knowing” has a lot to say about Lost’s aesthetic and worldview. But the book that has Lost written all over it is Barthelme’s The Dead Father, a surreal novel about a group of people literally dragging the massive body of a monstrous and monolithic ”dead father” across the country to its final resting place. The dead father in The Dead Father is symbolic of so many things that shape and form us — bad parents, corrupt institutions, f—ed up philosophies. I believe Lost shares those same thematic concerns. The show is an allegory about a new millennia yearning for a new hope but still haunted by the despair of the era past; about a culture burdened by the crushing weight of our dead fathers and forefathers. We want the clean slate of John Locke, but dammit if the awful chalk scribbles of our stupid teachers can’t be erased. Lost, then, isn’t about burying the past, but finding the grace to live with it.

Lest you think I’m just talking out of my butt again, there are others among us who agree with me. Or maybe they just like talking out of their butts, too. Take this theory from a reader who didn’t sign his/her name:

”By interpreting Lost through its themes I think the inevitable path of the show becomes clear. In my opinion there are only two important themes: 1. Science vs. Religion (or Reason vs Faith); and 2. The Failure of the Father Figure. This second theme ties into the first. The micro-universe of The Island is a mirror for the conflicts of the larger world. All God’s children are lost, doomed by their conflicts and their deadly technologies. At the heart of this conflict sits Jacob, the alleged leader of the Others. But rather than a spiritual Superman we find Jacob to be an old, flickering half-man, half-spirit, seemingly drained and in need of John Locke’s help. Jacob can be understood on two levels: literally, he is the patriarch of the Others; and metaphorically he is the weakened, exploited Father of a corrupted society. His estranged partner is the Mother, Science, who is represented in the show by all the dying mothers on The Island. The only way to save them, to heal Jacob, and solve the Valenzetti Equation [aka ”The Numbers,” a mathematical formula developed by The Hanso Foundation that predicts the end of the world] is to reconcile the two worldviews of science and religion.”

Which as with most fan speculation most likely has nothing to do with what will actually eventually be revealed, but its fun nonetheless.

Anyway… props to Blake and Jordin. They’ve been in my top 5 all along…

Pop Culture Interlude

American Idol – Quite happy that Blake is still in it. He’s the only one left that seems to have real music theory knowledge.

LOST – What the hell is going on???!!! So we “met” Jacob – a mostly invisible guy in a chair whom the producers say is as important to the Lost mythology as the Emperor was to Star Wars. Where is all the money and food coming from if the hostiles really took over Dharma? We are being told that the season finale will change everything – something as twisted as finding a “rattlesnake in your mailbox.” Note to self – stop tivoing these things, watching them late at night and then stay up too late googleing for spoilers…

And in real culture news. This is really cool. Pro-life actions not just words.

Random Acts of Linkage

A few spiffy things I would direct your attention to while my brain is on complete weekend mush mode (as in I’m having fun catching up on Iron Chef America episodes)…

A really cool site that was mentioned in the comments of the Why Buy Fair Trade post below – Fair Trade Sports. Get shirts, hats, water bottles, and well made sports equipment that were fairly made and traded. Great idea – promoting fairness in sports beyond the playing field.

Then if you are interested in the good, bad and ugly ways in which Christianity makes the news – check out the new blog Christianity in the News. So far I have found it fascinating – although there are days when I’m not sure if my reading it is a good educational resource or a sick obsession. It’s worth checking out at any rate.

And in the utterly superficial category… If you are as obsessed with LOST as I am and are dying to know how this season will end, Spoilerfix has a handful of tantalizing tidbits to offer. But they also reveal that the next season won’t start until next January – so we will be forced to wait with whatever horrible cliffhanger they leave us with until then.

Life Update

Posted on March 2, 2007July 8, 2025

Snapshot of my life at the moment…

Status quo with the heath stuff. I was back at the doctor today and they were surprised at the swelling and pain I am still having – so more and different drugs. Oh so much fun.

I’m spending most of my time working on stuff for the upcoming Emerging Women Midwest Gathering. Its coming together and we have a great group of women attending. There are a handful of spots still available if anyone is interested in attending. Registration is open through March 9.

I’ve finally got around to starting to read Peter Rollins How (not) to Speak of God (for the upcoming Emerging Women book discussion) and now I’m understanding what all the buzz has been about. This book is summarizing so many ideas I’ve explored over the past 6 years. It is one of the most clear portrayals of emerging postmodern thought that I have read yet. Highly recommended.

And on the completely fun level… can I express my frustration with American Idol and LOST. I still love Lost, but what’s up with all the false/misleading advertising? We’re still waiting to find out anything (what Jack’s tattoos say wasn’t the huge reveal I was hoping for). And I’m sick of the popularity contest parts of American Idol. Why get rid of people who can sing like AJ and Leslie and keep horrible singers like Antonella and Sanjaya?! It’s just frustrating…

SF/Fantasy Geek Heaven

Posted on March 2, 2007July 7, 2025

So I’ve expressed by excitement at the upcoming new Harry Potter book and movie, but that’s not the only thing a sci-fi/fantasy geek such as I has to look forward to.

Jacqueline Carey posted a summary of the upcoming Kushiel’s Justice at her website – here. (don’t read the amazon summary unless you want to know a major spoiler…). Her books are always brilliant – vividly detailed alternate worlds.

And plans are still underway for a live action Star Wars TV Series. Many of the movie actors are reported to be appearing in cameos, but the series will focus on Expanded Universe characters. Will we perhaps get to see Mara Jade on screen???

Filming starts on Indiana Jones 4 this June. Rumor has it that Natalie Portman will play Indy’s daughter.

And while plans for filming The Hobbit are moving forward (albeit without Peter Jackson directing), there is other good Tolkien news. Christopher Tolkien has finally finished editing one of the unfinished tales and we will be treated to the release of The Children of Hurin next month. Now this of course may mean that I might once again embark on a LOTR binge – reading the books (and unfinished writings) multiple times in succession, but we shall see.

Proselytizer for Satan???

Posted on February 22, 2007July 7, 2025

So its been awhile since I was called a “proselytizer for Satan” just because I had read the Harry Potter books. Perhaps that crowd turned it’s attention to the Da Vinci Code (which I read, enjoyed, and thought brought up some good questions for those who care). Anyway, I had to smile when I saw this Chick tract reposted over at Andrew Jones’ blog

So from this preacher who likes Harry Potter – may the wait until July 21 be short.
