Everyday Justice

2009 April 17
by Julie Clawson

So I'm excited to reveal the cover of my upcoming book Everyday Justice: The Global Impact of Our Daily Choices. What do you think?

The book is being published by IVP and will be released in October. I saw it listed in the newest IVP trade catalog recently which was really cool and made the whole thing seem more real. As in – all the writing I tried to squeeze in between diaper changes and playing Candyland is actually becoming something.

The book, as the title implies, is about justice – about the ways each of us can live into the way of life Jesus calls us to live. I think too often we get overwhelmed by justice issues and decide that they are just for the Mother Teresas or the Shane Claibornes of the world to care about. So this book is about the ways each of us in our simple everyday lives can act justly. In it I explore the ways that we can love our neighbors through what we eat, wear, drive, and consume. But the book isn't just a list of do's and don'ts, but an exploration of what it means to love our neighbor. It explores what it means not only to pursue justice with our day to day actions, but also how we can avoid supporting systems of injustice with those actions as well.

I'm excited about it – click here if you want to read what others are saying. I just thought I'd share some of the excitement at moving forward in this process with you all here!

We have a "Do-Gooder" book club that we host once a month on Sunday mornings @ BP. I think we'd like to do this when it comes out.

Looks great, Julie! Congratulations. I will definitely be ordering from Amazon come October.

I just sent the manuscript for my first book to my editor at Zondervan. All I can say is I don't know how you did it with a new baby! I'm impressed.

Keep us posted on the release date. We're rooting for you!

Really looking forward to it. I definitely fall in the category of those who get overwhelmed with social justice issues and feel like if I'm not doing something Mother Teresa-esque, I'm not doing social justice. Eager to read about ways to live and act justly everyday.

julie, your book sounds great. i have become interested in the issues you mention and it has been overwhelming to do the research and then to actually take small steps to change. i look forward to reading your suggestions. just finding fair trade plain milk chocolate that actually tastes good was quite the effort (i found it at trader joes)! now i have to be intentional to buy it and not get the regular brands of chocolate.

    Julie,
I am really looking forward to your book. Congratulations — really. May God bless it, may it's pages be well worn, may it look used by your readers because it is turned to again and again. We need this.

This book sounds great! I smell an upcoming book club!

I'm glad there's something out there that speaks to radical change, but makes it accessible to the average person.

    Julie,
I's so excited to hear and see the upcoming face of your book. All the best.

I have to tell you that every time I go to your page and see the title "One hand clapping" I have to chuckle as a long time ago this was my part in a skit I performed as an evangelism effort…(delivered dreamily) "I am one hand clapping in the wind." Funny stuff.

We've been reading "Everyday Justice" for the past few weeks at a small-group Bible study I attend. While my wife and I have been moving in the direction of greater personal social responsibility for the past several years, your book has done a lot to make us stop and reconsider just how little progress we have made, and just how much further we have to go.

The book has been frequently challenging, frustrating at times, and always encouraging. I'm a latecomer to this post, but I wanted to say thank you for writing it.
