Excellent movie! I watched it twice when it first came out. Haven't read the book - but will try to check it out. I haven't seen the DVD extended commentary either, but am very intrigued to view it. I was originally captivated by this film by not only the excellent cinematography, but the powerfully pragmatic interface between hope and despair.

*****possible spoiler alert*******
Particularly I think of the scene where the baby is being carried out of the building full of detainees and soldiers. There is a bubble of wonder it seems, that evaporates as quickly as it appeared.

The film made me curious about how people hang onto hope in the most desperate of situations.

Have you read the book by PD James which was the basis of this movie? It far surpasses the film and deals much more eloquently with the struggle for hope in hopeless situations. She also focuses much more on the existential struggle to know if God is real and if it even matters. I highly recommend it!
